Getting started

Once you are approved for Medical Assistance we begin the process of enrolling you in something called Managed Care.  After you are approved for Medical Assistance and before you enroll in a managed care plan, you will receive a type of coverage called fee-for-service, also known as Straight Medical Assistance or Straight MA. This means you can go to any providers who accept Medical Assistance, and the provider will bill the state directly. Click here to be directed to a provider directory.

If you have questions about your health plan and what they cover, please call your managed care provider.

If you are having trouble getting services covered by your managed care provider please call the DHS Managed Care Ombudsman office at 1.800.657.3729.

Note: This does not apply to MinnesotaCare. Once you are enrolled in a health plan, you must get all medical care from that health plan's providers. If you go somewhere else without your health plan's approval, you will have to pay the bills out of pocket.
